The department of the Government
of Canada, which is responsible for administering Immigration
services and Citizenship registration, is Citizenship and
Immigration Canada with staff in Canada and overseas.
Among its responsibilities, Citizenship and Immigration Canada
facilitates Immigration to this country by admitting immigrants,
foreign students, visitors and temporary workers who enhance
Canada's social and economic growth; it resettles, protects and
provides a safe haven for refugees; it helps newcomers adapt to
Canadian society and become Canadian citizens; and it manages
access to Canada to protect the security and health of Canadians
and the integrity of Canadian laws.
On the Citizenship side, Citizenship and Immigration Canada
manages the application process and guides applicants through
the steps to becoming Canadian citizens. Citizenship and
Immigration Canada staff process Citizenship applications,
requests for proof of Citizenship and searches of Citizenship
records. Each year, approximately 160,000 people become Canadian
citizens and take an oath at ceremonies across the country to
accept the responsibilities and privileges of being a Canadian
citizen.
On the Immigration side, Citizenship and Immigration Canada
staff overseas and across Canada do their utmost to ensure that
the Immigration system runs smoothly and efficiently by
reviewing Immigration applications and ensuring that each new
Immigration applicant meets various Immigration criteria for
admission, including medical, criminal and security checks.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada will continue to play an
important role in the history and future of Canada.
